The Unloved

GRADE: 7

A film that gives a child’s eye view of the U.K.’s government-run care system for orphans and children in danger.

Director: Samantha Morton
Country of Origin: UK

THOUGHTS:

A solid directing debut from Samantha Morton. This sad tale of a recently-orphaned girl navigating the England’s care system is driven more by moments of poetic impressionism than by narrative, and it’s the better for it. It studiously steers clear of melodrama and sentimentality and instead gives the viewer a more honest window into the harrowing experience of being a parent-less child.
