THOUGHTS:

Another foray into high-octane, sustained anxiety from the Safdie brothers, this time with a story revolving around a small-time thief who involves his mentally handicapped brother in his schemes. Pattinson does an excellent job, but, as was the case in Heaven Knows What, Buddy Duress steals the show with his utterly authentic, naturalistic performance. The Safdie’s trademark heavy synth soundtrack and overlapping dialog is showcased, but this might also be their most visually exciting film, with the amusement park set piece in particular a treat for the eyes. The construction of the story is satisfying—just as Nick is about to get some much-needed help from a social worker, his brother barges in and leads him down a path of destruction. But when the film concludes, with Connie’s life now in ruins, Nick is set back on his road to redemption.
