Fitzcarraldo

GRADE:  9.5

The story of Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, an extremely determined man who intends to build an opera house in the middle of a jungle.

Director: Werner Herzog
Country of Origin: West Germany | Peru

Thoughts:

Breathtaking film about a man so obsessed with building an opera house in the Amazon that he concocts a plan to pull a steamship over a mountain in a dangerous part of the river. The film is bathed in Herzog’s special blend of awe and mystery, and Kinski delivers yet another memorable portrait of a half-crazed man on unrelenting willpower. The adventure that makes up the bulk of the movie is so utterly grand and ambitious in scope, that it’s impossible to watch the movie without thinking of Fitzcarraldo and his ship as stand-ins for Herzog and his film.
